Eric Andati
Nairobi, Kenya
"I learnt of the Companion Flag from my childhood buddy
Amos Akwabi of Nairobi. He has done such a marvelous job in
our local schools and has requested me to join him in this noble
mission.
"There is nothing as hard as trying to stop an idea whose
time has come. Companion Flag is such an idea. It has since
come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sit
back and let things happen to them. They go out and happen to
things. This is what we intend to do with Companion Flag!"

Paul and Michele Aoki, both
members of CFSI's Educators' Advisory Board, have made wonderful
connections for CFSI throughout Washington State!
"Our love of international travel and foreign languages
brought us together many years ago and taught us how much we
have in common with others in the world. How delightful it was
to see that perspective embodied in a symbol like the Companion
Flag. We have shared the Companion Flag with friends at home
and people we've met in Japan and Russia, and we plan to include
it in our future world travels." |

message with other conflict resolution professionals in the

"In my work with a community dispute resolution center,
I'm often approached by schools for consultation on how we can
shape the values of peaceful resolution in our youth. I tell
them about the Companion Flag. I can think of no better way
to simply define the relationship between self and global identity
for even the youngest elementary school age child." |

Cari Land, a school counselor,
has launched two successful campaigns to adopt the Companion
Flag at elementary schools where she works.
"I'm so honored
to be part of this project! I heard about the Companion Flag
from a fellow teacher who told me it was his dream to see our
district take the Companion Flag idea and run with it. I felt
it was a valuable educational tool for our students and decided
to get started introducing it.
"Thanks to the support and participation
of my colleagues, both schools where I work soon adopted Companion
Flags during 2003! Even parents are getting excited about this
idea and offering to deliver Companion Flags to other parts
of the world during their summer vacations. Anyone can do this,
but I still feel especially privileged to be an official ambassador...
you should, too! If you're an educator and have questions about

Melanie Olson spearheaded the
introduction of the Companion Flag at her elementary school,
then wrote a successful grant to fund the installation of a
new flagpole, a new school flag, and a Companion Flag to go
with it.
"The philosophy of the Companion
Flag is an important concept for all people to embrace. As a
teacher at Seattle Public Schools, I am privileged to have a
Companion Flag in my classroom as a visual reminder of how we
should honor our differences as well as what we have in common.
My hopes are that all the children of the world will grow up
with this value system, and pass it on to the next generation."
|
|
Stephen Sealey, a scholar-athlete,
researched the Companion Flag then introduced it to his classmates
at the Federal Way Public Academy, Federal Way, Washington.
"I feel that so many times we as human beings forget
or even never realize how much we all have in common with each
other. Differences seem to shadow and blanket those similarities
and how we as humans recognize them. A flag waving in the air
is the perfect reminder of those similarities, because a flag
will always stay in one place no matter what circumstance you
and others are in." |

school while visiting family in Callian, France (August 2003).

back home in the US. Stay tuned!
"My children were eager to support and promote this program
after hearing it explained at a school assembly. We are lucky
enough to regularly travel out of the country, and this has
given the kid's a 'bigger view' of the world, and the part they
can play in it.
"For me, I support the message of universality and celebrate
the opportunity to promote unity in the world. I also believe
children are the best vehicle to carry this message forth."

Rev. Steven Towles, Director
of the Unity Peace Center, facilitated the introduction of the
Companion Flag at a Sunday service of Seattle Unity Church.
"The Companion Flag Project is
more than symbolic in nature, it speaks of a very specific connection
that needs to be acknowledged and reinforced in many different
ways. We do have our differences and unique qualities, but we
share this planet and we all have common interests that all
too often are forgotten. The Companion Flag Project helps us
remember that and act from that awareness." |

"The concept of the Companion Flag
gave my students the opportunity to see that around the world
there is a common ground which they share with all peoples.
They were enthused with the opportunity to explore their thoughts
and feelings and became aware that they too can make a difference
in our world."

"At a time when everyone is rethinking
the word "patriotism", it is especially important
to be more universal in our outlook. I, for one, consider myself
a universal patriot. I'm proud of this universe and am glad
to be here. The Companion Flag promotes this idea. Our love
and respect must grow to include all of life. I am proud to
fly the Companion Flag outside our church because it honors
all nations."

of basic human interests and aspirations: clean environment,
sound education, the dignity of work, safe, secure cities and
towns, sufficient and nourishing food, etc.
"Symbols are powerful catalysts for human behavior. The
Companion Flag is a compelling and desperately needed symbol
of the common aspirations of all human beings. We are honored

"I learned about the Companion Flag by pure coincidence
while searching the web. The idea of turning elements of separation
into elements of unification thrilled me. Many people in my

example, people in the US. However, the goal of adopting the
Companion Flag globally can bring the world forward." |

Anita Lenges' amazing joie
de vivre and enthusiasm for the Companion Flag have combined
to make learning about the Companion Flag an unforgettable experience!
Anita is a university instructor and member
of the CFSI Educators Advisory Board.
"I work with teachers to explore the relationship between
culture and
mathematics. While talking about cultural diversity and the
need for
mathematical diversity, I also share about the universals of
mathematics and people. The mathematical universals are not
what people typically think of as school mathematics. All cultural
groups develop mathematical tools and processes that are integrative
aspects of their cultural practices. So along with all people
needing food, love, safety, ..., they also develop mathematical
practices. Funny, huh? While working with teachers from Indonesia,
I gave them all lapel pins and Companion Flag cards to take
back with them to remind them of our friendship and unity. Perhaps
we need another language represented on the CF website for Bahasa
Indonesia!"
